PTR Adoption Process, Information, & Fees

PLEASE complete ALL questions on the application. If an application is not completely filled out, we will not follow up as we get inundated with applications and cannot take the time to fill in blanks. Contact us directly if information was inadvertently missed on a submitted application.

References will be contacted. This typically takes 3-4 days depending on the influx of applications. PLEASE contact your veterinarian to give permission for our team to speak with them about your current or previous pet’s care.

*We do charge a $15 application fee to help offset the time and cost of processing applications. This fee is considered a donation for the care of our animals at our facility and is non-refundable.*

Once your application passes the initial screening process, we will call you for a brief interview.  After approval, an appointment will be set up for a meet & greet at which time you can take your pet home with you. Please note that kitties go very quickly and quite often the kitty that you applied for may not be available, in which case we may make recommendations. We do our very best to make a good match for all members of your family (including furry ones). Once approved, you must be able to pick up your kitten within 48 hours. Adoptions are at the sole discretion of the director of PTR.

Please note the following:

  • Incomplete applications will not be processed (please make sure all information is completed)
  • All current and previous animals must be spayed/neutered and have a history of veterinary care and vaccinations
  • All applicants must be at least 21 years of age
  • If renting a property, your landlord will be contacted to approve the placement of pets
  • Puppies under 6 months old will not be placed in homes where applicants work 8 hours or more and no provisions are made for midday care of pups
  • Kittens and cats will not be placed in a home with a dog unless there is a current or previous cat in the household or if there is a history of the dog being "cat friendly"
  • We do not allow our cats to be declawed

Surrendering a pet

Pet Tails Rescue has very limited resources for placement of surrendered pets. Effective immediately, we are only able to consider returns of cats & dogs that were adopted through our organization. Returns will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

It is likely that there will be a waiting period before we can accommodate a returned pet based on our current situation. We do not require a surrender fee, but we do require that all returned pets be current on all vaccinations due to their potential exposure to younger kittens or pups presently in our care.

We will only consider the return of pets adopted within the State of New Hampshire and through Pet Tails Rescue.

The decision to surrender a pet is a very difficult one for your pet as well as your family. Please consider reaching out to friends or family members or consider trying to rehome your pet through an online resource such as https://rehome.adoptapet.com.
