Pet Tails Rescue, a dedicated non-profit animal rescue founded by Maureen Cahill in March 2012, is located on Route 4 in Northwood, NH. Our facility serves multiple purposes, including quarantine, training, and facilitating the adoption process for homeless dogs and cats. We are proud to be supported by a group of volunteers committed to the rescue and placement of these animals.
As an approved 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in NH, registered with the NH Charitable Trust and the NH Department of Agriculture as a recognized Rescue/Shelter, Pet Tails Rescue has made a significant impact since our inception. We have successfully rescued and rehomed nearly 4,000 animals from high-kill shelters, providing them with the chance for a wonderful life that they would not have had due to overcrowding in southern shelters.
Our animal adoption process primarily serves families throughout New England. Most of our dogs and cats have spent considerable time in foster care with loving families before adoption, allowing us to understand their temperaments and personalities. This enables us to make a “good match” with prospective families.
To promote our available pets, we utilize platforms such as Facebook, Adopt-A-Pet, and collaborate with other organizations and businesses.

Inspired by her rescue dog, Mattie, Maureen followed her dream to help animals and retired after over 30 years in the insurance agency world. From her first dog, Whiskers, to her current dog, Piper, Maureen's love for animals has driven her to continue her rescue efforts and support the adoption process. Alongside her wife, Sandra, Maureen has one child, eight cats, and one dog, all adopted with love through the animal adoption process. When not working to unite families one adoption at a time, she enjoys writing, visiting art galleries, and exploring the many antiquing opportunities her community offers. Maureen takes great pride in the community that Pet Tails Rescue has established, having rescued well over 5,000 animals through both foster care and direct adoption.

Adi has a soft spot for senior cats and grumpy roosters, and she believes that the animal adoption process can be one of the most rewarding experiences. Adi has a soft spot for senior cats and grumpy roosters, and she believes that the animal adoption process can be one of the most rewarding experiences. Throughout her life, she has lived with an array of creatures and has loved them all, considering rats to be some of the most underrated companions. During the pandemic, she found herself hatching chicks for the first time since childhood, ensuring that all of them are destined to live out their natural lives. She also introduced mason bees into her backyard, though they apparently did not enjoy their carefully crafted mason bee condo and flew off into the sunset. When she’s not feeding birds or scooping litter, Adi writes books for young people, including her recent titles Why Would I Lie? and Hearts of Ice (Scholastic). Adi lives in Northwood with two cats, a blue and gold macaw, a personal trainer, and a small but mighty flock of chickens. Her passion for animals extends to supporting non-profit animal rescue organizations like Pet Tails Rescue and the importance of foster care for pets in need. Mary Hamel grew up in Massachusetts and moved to New Hampshire in 1980. Now retired, she lives in Northwood with her husband, Denis. In 2019, they said goodbye to their beloved Boxer/Boston Terrier, Abby, and several months later, they embraced the animal adoption process by adopting their first cat from Pet Tails Rescue, a wonderful kitty named Timmy Tonka, and the rest is history. Mary, who has a background as a secretary for over 40 years, offered to volunteer for administrative work at this non-profit animal rescue. Additionally, she is a horse lover; she and her mom owned a Morgan horse named Johnny for several years. They took riding and jumping lessons together, participated in school shows, and eventually bought Johnny, who served as their school horse. Mary has three children and two grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys country music, line dancing, the beach, traveling, and her latest passion, kayaking. She also supports foster care initiatives to help animals in need.
